A photography exhibition commencing 20th May 2021 involving final year students from UWTSD. Here is an introduction from the photography Programme Director, Siân Addicott:

“In Search of Ground, conceptualised by final year students from Photography in the Arts and Documentary Photography & Visual Activism BA Courses, is an eclectic collection of works connected by the common thread of being created under the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is testament to the students’ resilience and creativity that they have produced such diverse work, ranging from explorations into personal identity to challenging surveillance and algorithmic cultures and alternative observations of Generation Z. On behalf of the staff within the photography department at UWTSD, I would like to congratulate the students on their endeavours and wish them every success in the future.”

My work “Xeno” will be appearing in the show. You can find my artist statement and some stills from my short film below:

Underrepresentation is a big issue for non-binary people and has huge repercussions throughout the community often leading to struggles with mental health and identity. In the past I have used my practice to discuss my own experience with gender, but I now feel a responsibility to use my platform to represent the wider community and join them in a push for acceptance. Following on from my previous exploration of gender, Xeno represents the non-binary community through the medium of moving image. Creating a short film allows for the fluidity of gender to be expressed outside of a static frame. Uniquely, this project relies not just on secondary research, but first-hand responses from other non-binary people in order to represent experiences shared by many.

In addition to having my art appear in this exhibition, I also worked on the curation and the catalogue.
